ENG- The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognises the right of persons with disabilities to self-determination with regard to their sexual identity and expression. The concept of sexual rights is based on the principles of bodily integrity, privacy and the autonomy of individuals to make free choices about their sexuality, relationships and family planning, with the necessary support. However, people with intellectual disabilities, especially women, face significant barriers due to the prevalent myths and stereotypes surrounding their sexual-affective relationships. This doctoral thesis aims to investigate the intersection between intellectual disability and affective-sexual relationships, primarily from the perspective of women with intellectual disabilities. The thesis begins with a systematic literature review to identify the barriers and supports to affective-sexual relationships. It then presents an in-depth study that explores the challenges and supports of men and women with intellectual disabilities. This study is based on an inclusive approach to research. Later, it examines the gendered difficulties experienced by seven women with intellectual disabilities, as revealed through the analysis of semi-structured interviews. Finally, the thesis explores the perceptions of motherhood of nine women with intellectual disabilities through focus groups, identifying barriers, supports and demands. The thesis presents a series of analyses and proposed changes to promote greater respect for the sexual rights of people with intellectual disabilities, with a particular focus on women. It includes a series of recommendations aimed at improving the quality of adapted sex education, increasing research based on the experiences of these individuals, raising social awareness and eliminating stereotypes. In addition, the research provides a theoretical basis for future support resources and initiatives and explores their social and public implications
