We explore, through content analysis, the skills of making repetition patterns in five editorial projects of Early Childhood Education in Chile and Spain: copying, interpolating, extending, abstracting, recognising the unit, creating. Forty-nine tasks are analysed, showing a greater presence of the skill 'extend'. It is concluded that it is necessary for textbooks to offer pattern tasks with an increasing level of difficulty from 'copy' to 'create', in order to develop the beginnings of algebraic thinking ​
