This study thoroughly examines the play interactions between preschoolers and their attachment figures in Ecuadorian families, using the Mother-Child Symbolic Intersubjective Development Scale (Sadurni, 1993). Forty-five recordings of children aged 2 to 60 months were analyzed, supported by reliability tests that enhance the credibility of the data, with a reliability coefficient of k=0.87. The results show that only 20% of the children played at an intersubjective level consistent with their developmental age. Furthermore, 60% of the children and 55.6% of the attachment figures focused on object manipulation play. 77.7% of the attachment figures interacted at levels lower than expected. It is noteworthy that, in stages where symbolic intersubjective play with narrative would be expected, all interactions were positioned at lower levels or characterized by didactic interactions without sharing the pleasure associated with play. These findings underscore the need to investigate intervention strategies that promote developmental progress through play. It is suggested that future studies explore the underlying causes of these results and design effective interventions to optimize the quality of interactions between children and their attachment figures through play. This analysis highlights the need for a greater focus on play development in the Ecuadorian context, encouraging exploration and improvement in adult-child interactions
