Five stances are described in order to define a methodological approach in the area of mathematics: 1) decisions on the orientation of mathematics teaching; 2) decisions on the selection of mathematical knowledge; 3) decisions on the planning of mathematics teaching-learning activities; 4) decisions on the management of mathematics teaching-learning activities; and 5) decisions on the assessment of mathematics. From the gear of these stances, a competencebased approach is proposed in which the mathematics teaching-learning process is based on planning through teaching itineraries, management through mathematical processes and formative assessment ​
