This article offers guidelines and didactic resources for evaluating the mathematics competence of primary school students. A model is presented based on a description and analysis of the decision-making process and set of strategies and instruments that a specific school has introduced. The model includes five phases: 1) organisation of mathematics teaching; 2) search for rich competency-based mathematics activities; 3) specification of the dimensions and competences of mathematics knowledge that should be assessed; 4) selection of the dimensions and competences assessed in each activity; 5) design of specific assessment instruments, especially rubrics. The article concludes by suggesting that the model could help other schools eager to provide mathematics education in line with 21st century needs to embark on similar processes, adapted to their own specific contexts
