The article aims to advance the understanding of the conditions and characteristics of the humblest social groups of rural society in Empordà in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries -the 'treballadors'-, as well as how social dynamics affected them and the resulting changes in social identity. Methodologically, a well-documented case was chosen: the Romaguera family of Sant Miquel de Fluvià. The family archive and other complementary sources make it possible to reconstruct in some detail the evolution of a lineage originally labeled as 'treballadors'. The evolution of their wealth, their ability to save and accumulate expressed in the dowries they could pay and receive, their level of indebtedness and the evolution of their social position according to the labels that identified them is analysed. This reconstruction spans eight generations, during which relevant changes can be seen. The trajectory followed by the Romaguera family illustrates the possibility of evolving, from the eighteenth century status of 'treballador', to that of relatively independent peasant owne ​
