Prudenci Bertrana, el caçador d’enyorances. Estudi periodístic (1896-1938)

Abstract

The present study focuses on the journalistic facet of Prudenci Bertrana (1867-1941), which is the least studied among the literary, pictorial facets of his career. That being so, the aim of this work is to fill a bibliographic gap. Prudenci Bertrana was not only a painter and writer, but he also became a journalist out of necessity. In fact, he was an artist unable to renounce the ideal of art that led Bertrana to scrape out a living with his quill. Despite this, he contributed to the main headlines of the first half of the 20th century, and his journalistic output exceeds 2,700 texts. In order to give value to Bertrana's journalism, this doctoral thesis is divided into two parts. The first corresponds to the intellectual biography of the author, where the two stages in which he developed his journalistic practice are highlighted: the initiatory phase and the artistic awakening of Bartrana in Girona, as well as the consolidation stage in Barcelona -which was the most prolific, but it also was the most tragic on a personal level-. The second part of this study deals with his journalistic work, as well as it approches the most outstanding sections of the author in Barcelona, after presenting the list of articles collected in the annex: the chronicles of L'Esquella de la Torratxa, the ones from El Poble Català and La Publicidad, and the impromptu ones from La Veu de Catalunya. These different sections maintain a unity of character: they all describe the urban landscape of Barcelona from the ironic, perceptive perspective of someone longing for nature and feeling that he does not quite belong to the city. El present estudi se centra en la faceta periodística de Prudenci Bertrana (1867-1941), tenint en compte que és la menys estudiada, amb el propòsit d’omplir un buit bibliogràfic. Prudenci Bertrana va ser pintor, escriptor i periodista per necessitat perquè, per sobre de tot, va ser un artista incapaç de renunciar a l’ideal de l’art, per la qual cosa es va veure empès a malviure amb la ploma. No obstant això, va col·laborar a les principals capçaleres de la primera meitat del segle XX i la seva producció periodística supera els 2.700 textos. Per tal de donar valor al periodisme de Bertrana, la tesi doctoral es divideix en dues parts. La primera correspon a la biografia intel·lectual de l’autor i s’hi ressalten les dues etapes en què desenvolupa l’exercici periodístic: l’etapa iniciàtica i del desvetllament artístic, a Girona, i l’etapa de consolidació a Barcelona, la més prolífica però també la més tràgica a nivell personal. La segona part s’ocupa de la seva obra periodística i, després de presentar la relació d’articles recollida a l’annex, aborda les seccions més destacades de l’autor a Barcelona: les cròniques de L’Esquella de la Torratxa, els idearis d’El Poble Català i La Publicidad, i els impromptus de La Veu de Catalunya. Aquestes seccions mantenen una unitat de caràcter: en totes s’hi descriu el paisatge urbà barceloní des de la perspectiva irònica i perspicaç d’un enyorat de la natura que no sent que acabi d’encaixar a la ciutat.
