This doctoral thesis focuses on the integration of digital technologies in CLIL teacher development programs through the design and evaluation of the training program called AF-eCLIL, whose central objective is to empower CLIL teachers to integrate digital tools and resources into their CLIL teaching practice and, consequently, improve their teaching digital competence (TDC). AF-eCLIL is part of the pedagogical innovation teacher development program called "Generació Plurilingüe" (GEP), developed by the Department of Education of the Government of Catalonia.
The objectives of the thesis are to describe and characterize AF-eCLIL, as well as to understand and evaluate the results of its implementation through a single case study using a mixed qualitative-quantitative methodology.
The work is structured into three independent but interconnected studies. In the first study, based on the analysis of documentary data, the GEP program is presented within the linguistic and educational context of Catalonia. Adopting a narrative approach, the decision-making and design process of AF-eCLIL, as well as its pilot implementation, are explained.
The second and third studies evaluate specific aspects of the implementation of AF-eCLIL to determine its impact. Specifically, in the second study, participants' expectations towards AF-eCLIL and their assessment of the integrated digital tools and resources in the training sessions were examined. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected through ad hoc questionnaires. Qualitative data were analyzed using a categorization process, while quantitative data underwent statistical analysis. The third study focused on assessing the impact of AF-eCLIL on the participants' teaching digital competence. To achieve this objective, a pre-test (T1) was administered before the training and a post-test (T2) was conducted at the end. The questionnaire data were analyzed using statistical procedures.
From the data analysis, it is concluded that teachers value the digital tools and resources integrated into the AF-eCLIL training for their utility and applicability to their teaching practice. Specifically, they appreciate features that address the demands of the CLIL approach to teaching. However, it is observed that the correspondence between the degree of valuation given to the tools and their widespread use is not complete.
Regarding the participants' digital teaching competence, the results suggest an overall improvement between T1 and T2, particularly in those aspects related to their teaching practice and, those didactic, methodological, and curricular issues
