A language may be a central element of a community’s identity, but the relationships established between the centre and the periphery of that community may vary with physical distance and the existence of administrative boundaries. This thesis reveals how the Catalan language is experienced in the peripheral and western border territories of its domain. Following a quantitative and qualitative methodology, a wide variety of data on different disciplines was gathered. The results corroborate the initial hypothesis: the language in these areas is losing prestige as an institutional symbol, becoming more and more localised, increasingly used as a tool for parody or as an essential part of folklore – all of which, at the same time, increases the degree of linguistic discomfort among those who speak it. Making Catalan society aware of these results should help the agencies responsible for linguistic coding and communication to propose policies to help recover, internally, a certain linguistic well-being
