In recent years, the criminal policy of western countries tends towards the model of punitive populism, characterized by a tightening of criminal law and the use of it with electoral purposes. The evolution of Spanish criminal policy towards punitive populism can be explained by the relation between political parties, the mass media, public opinion and the victims. The political parties use this tightening of sentences as an electoral argument, in order to achieve a greater number of votes. For this, they are based on the fascination use of the media when transmitting information related to delinquency. At the same time, the victims are manipulated by political parties and the media ​
