This article reveals the interest and expectations expressed by young people when choosing a training course for youth recreational activity monitors to improve their skills. The responses given by young people on the pre-registration questionnaires for said course and the contents of a course held at a public youth recreational activity school in the autonomous region of Madrid from 2010 to 2017 are taken as a reference for this purpose. Employing an exploratory and interpretive methodology, the content analysis technique has been used to make categorizations that guide us towards the priority interest young people award to such training in the acquisition of professional, academic, and/or social skills. The main conclusions connect this training with the acquisition of social competence, and provide a reflection on the opportunity to foster the work of youth recreational activity schools in order to compensate for existing limitations in the acquisition of this competence in regular school education
