El convent de les Bernardes: exclaustració i restitució (1936-1939)

Compartir
After four hundred and forty-four years of uninterrupted presence in the Mercadal district, the Bernardine convent of Girona was burnt down and sacked shortly after the July 1936 military uprising. The building was subsequently demolished by the City Council in order to free the site for urban development. The first Francoist City Council deplored the episode, but also saw it as an opportunity to be exploited. The present article analyses the recovery of the Martyrology of Usuard and related incidents, the steps taken by Abbess Maria Josefa Tenas and Abbess Bernarda Thió i Rodés to recover the community’s rights and re-establish community life elsewhere and the successive urban development projects for the site
