Development of New Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is having a great impact on a social and occupational level. The field of mental health is not an exception and technologies such as chat, email, videoconferencing or computer are becoming familiar methods for assessment, treatment or vocational training. Within this new context, Virtual Reality (VR) has begun to position itself as one of the most promising tools for both clinical practice and research. VR offers a new paradigm of human-computer interaction where the user is no longer just a passive spectator of images and data on the screen, and becomes an active agent that can interact in real time three dimensional graphics with thereby creating the illusion of being physically inside the virtual world. This paper's main objective is to provide an overview on the VR, its current use in mental health and its potential in the teaching of psychology. The second aim is to present some of the main applications of this technology in psychology of emotions as an example that illustrates the potential of this technique in the training of psychologists. Thus VR is presented as an effective procedure for Mood Induction States (MIPs); then, a project used to enhance the effects of traditional relaxation techniques is outlined and, finally, the use of VR as a psychopathological laboratory is shown, where it is possible to assess attentional processes that may be related to an anxiety response
