Introduction: Misophonia is a condition characterized by disproportionate emotional and physiological reactions, termed “misophonic responses,” to both organic and inorganic everyday sounds, known as triggers. Misophonic responses may include anxiety, stress or tachycardia. Despite having an estimated prevalence of 20%, it is not recognized in the DSM-V or ICD-11, underdiagnosed and little known. The lack of knowledge in the healthcare setting could be aggravating the situation of hospitalized people because they are unable to use their personal coping mechanisms.
Objective: To identify the factors in the hospital enviroment that contribute to agrravate the symptoms of misophonia and to propose effective measures to reduce the triggers, thus improving hospital stay.
Methodology: This is a qualitative phenomenological study carried out at the General Hospital of Granollers. The sample will be formed by people with diagnosis or symptoms of misophonia who star at least three days in hospital. Data collection will be carried out by means of semi-structured interviews and will be analyzed with the ATLAS.ti program, in which codes and subcodes will be applied to classify triggers, emotional and physiological reactions, coping mechanisms and proposals for improvement provided by the participants.
Practical implications: The results of this work could contrubute to reducing the emotional and physical impact generated by the hospital enviroment, creating more inclusive hospitals and making the affected population more visible. The study promotes research, detection and recognition of the disease within the healthcare system and steeks to ensure that nursing care adopts a holistic vision. In the long term, the implementation of the proposed mesures could improve the recovery and quality of hospital stay of those affected
