This article examines sonnet XXXIX of Fernando de Herrera’s Algunas obras (“Pura, bella, suave Estrella mía”), a poem whose mythological structure includes such disparate figures as Diana, Venus, Cupid, Attis, Endymion, and Pan, one of them (Attis) at least unusual in a Petrarchan canzoniere. Moreover, and also unusually, in this sonnet XXXIX the character that embodies boldness is the beloved, and not the lover or his enemies, a peculiarity which complicates a potentially puzzling picture. To clarify it, we analyze the sonnet in relation to other texts in Algunas obras where the poet resorts either to some of the characters of the poem or to role reversals parallel to those that appear in the sonnet. Thus, we contextualize sonnet XXXIX in the system of Algunas obras and show its importance for understanding Herrera’s concerns.
