This article studies the rise and the charac-teristics of the social groups involved in the cork stopper manufacture during the first phase of its development from the eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries. The economic stratification of this group was defined by the wide differences between merchants and cork stopper makers and by the higher number of wage-earners in comparison with other crafts. The local origins of most cork stopper makers, as well as the transmission of the craft within the family, which was more relevant than in other artisan groups, were the basis of a strong trade cohesion, which was forged in the strug-gles related to the cork export tariffs. The at-tempts of creating corporative institutions, in a trade without previous guild tradition, sought to protect social qualification of the craft ​
