The hydraulic ram is a peculiar water pump. What makes it really special is that it works by taking advantage of the force produced inside a stream of water when it is cut sharply and at regular intervals through the hydraulic phenomenon called 'cop d'ariet', without the need for any other external energy source. Although it allows water to rise to considerable heights without any other cost than the own machine, its efficiency is quite limited, which is why today it is an obsolete device, despite having been widespread years ago in rural areas and having made life easier in the farming before the generalization of electricity ​
