During the last few decades there has been an increase in the number of filmic and literary productions related to the antihero who, as a general rule, has been portrayed as the antithesis of the hero. In order to confront the present dissonance that the character encounters in the theory of literature, this research aims at inquiring into the meaning of the term by analysing its origins, evolution, characteristics and archetypes, which could also be partaking in others and which, further, are based upon specialised writers and professors and their critical divulgations. In like manner, this dissertation tackles the sociological and psychological premises which uphold that the audience identifies more with the antihero than with the hero, as well as a study of the moral factors that have a bearing on it
