Intellectual disability affects 1 in 100 people in Catalonia. A major challenge in the
field of disability is for people to be able to control their lives autonomously and
independently. To achieve this, the health and quality of life of the person is
essential. Healthy living habits are behaviors that have a positive impact on physical,
mental and social well-being, so it is necessary to incorporate these behaviors from
childhood and adapt them to the needs of each child.
Objectives: The main objective of the project is to know the healthy lifestyle habits
of children with mild and moderate intellectual disabilities between 6 and 11 years of
three special schools in the region of Gironès. In addition, to know the perception of
parents and how they cope with the disability of children to establish good habits and
analyze the promotion that makes nursing of these healthy habits to children with
intellectual disabilities and their families.
Methodology: This is an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study that
will be carried out in three special schools in the Gironès region, the Font de l'Abella
Education Center, the Joan Riu Education School and the Madre de Dios del
Carmen Education Center. The period will be eleven months, from January to
November 2024. The study population will be children diagnosed with mild or
moderate intellectual disability, who are in the age range of 6 to 11 years. The study
instruments will be two questionnaires, one addressed to the children to assess their
health and healthy habits and the other addressed to the caregivers, based on
questions about healthy lifestyle habits and their promotion by nursing professionals.
The variables of both questionnaires will be studied and analyzed using the
Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS). The result of this project will be
used to improve the quality of life of children with intellectual disabilities and their
families
