Ànimes preses. "La mort i la primavera", de Mercè Rodoreda: etnografia, primitivisme i espiritualitat

Abstract

This study is a monographic analysis of Mercè Rodoreda’s posthumous novel, La mort i la primavera, the work that has received the least critical attention. It is a fascinating and very complex novel, both because of the strange imaginary it presents and because of the diversity of drafting states that are preserved in the archives of the Fundació Mercè Rodoreda (IEC). It is an extremely enigmatic work and difficult to interpret that the author wrote in 1961, corrected until 1963 and since then the question has been raised as to whether she returned to it. In any case, shortly before she died, she had stated that she wanted to correct it and publish it. There are three different editions – from 1986, 1997 and 2008 – and the reissue of the first, which is from 2017. It was not until that year that it began to have a true echo in the Catalan literary field. Our research is based on two axes: on the one hand, the interpretation of such a beautiful and dark text, and on the other, understanding why it has been such a forgotten novel, even though Rodoreda herself considered it as what would be her masterpiece. We start from the hypothesis that reading this cruel novel collapse certain clichés associated with Rodoreda and that it allows us to reread his best-known work in a new light. Regarding the hermeneutical study, our main hypothesis is that Rodoreda dialogues aesthetically with ethnography and primitivism, very much in vogue in Paris in the first half of the 20th century

El present estudi és una anàlisi monogràfica de la novel·la pòstuma de Mercè Rodoreda, La mort i la primavera, l’obra que menys atenció crítica ha rebut. Es tracta d’una novel·la fascinant i molt complexa, tant per l’estrany imaginari que presenta com per la diversitat d’estats de redacció que es conserven a l’arxiu de la Fundació Mercè Rodoreda (IEC). És una obra summament enigmàtica i de difícil interpretació que l’autora escrigué el 1961, corregí fins el 1963 i des de llavors s’obre l’interrogant de si la va tornar a reprendre. En tot cas, poc abans de morir havia manifestat que volia corregir-la i publicar-la. Existeixen tres edicions diferents –del 1986, 1997 i 2008– i la reedició de la primera, que és del 2017. No va ser fins aquell any que La mort i la primavera va començar a comptar amb un veritable ressò en el camp literari català. La nostra recerca es fonamenta en dos eixos: d’una banda, la interpretació d’un text tan bell i fosc, i de l’altra, entendre per què ha estat una novel·la tan oblidada, tot i que la mateixa Rodoreda la considerés com la que seria la seva obra mestra. Partim de la hipòtesi que la lectura d’aquesta novel·la cruel ensorra certs clixés associats a Rodoreda i que permet rellegir la seva obra més coneguda sota una nova llum. Pel que fa a l’estudi hermenèutic, la nostra hipòtesi principal és que Rodoreda dialoga estèticament amb l’etnografia i el primitivisme, molt en voga al París de la primera meitat del segle XX
