The economic relations between spouses in the Iberian Peninsula should be studied in their cultural context. A framework of analysis can be the Western and Eastern Christian Mediterranean. This work presents an overview of the economic regimes of marriage in the Italian Peninsula and the Byzantine Empire. Although these areas developed independently, they are historically related and share a similar economic and social reality. Based on this finding, the possible similarities between these regimes are raised. Finally, a common structure for this area is proposed and, at the same time, the way in which this structure is observed in the Iberian area ​
