This article analyzes a passage of the Epithalamium inserted in Góngora’s Soledades (I, 815-817), taking into account the reception of classical literary motifs in Neo-Latin and vernacular literature. The mention of the mythical figure of Niobe in a fragment of the nuptial chorus assumes the oratory function of an exemplum a contrario, since although it exalts the fecundity of the Theban queen, at the same time it warns the bride against the risks of pride, impiety and boasting. To illustrate the exemplary meaning the female figure assumes several epigrams and emblems are closely examined in order to correctly identify the moral warning ​
