This article provides a critical review of the legal regulation of language usage in education in Catalonia during the Second Spanish Republic. Analysis of the regulatory provisions is completed with a more political science-based review, focused on the consideration of the socio-political context of the time and the meaning of the arguments made in political debates that brought about a number of parliamentary and government initiatives in this regard ​
