Problem-based learning (PBL) starts with a problem or a problematic situation that students must solve. PBL is a means for students to develop independent learning skills. This development requires that the method promotes student motivation, the meaning of what is learnt and lifelong learning skills. This paper develops a tool to assess the level of engagement in learning by students with an active methodology. The tool will increase awareness about PBL, the pros and cons of PBL with respect to other methodologies, the effect that certain strategies have on the involvement of students in learning and it will improve educational practices
