Abstract

This article analyses the cómic book Maus, by Art Spiegelman (1986-1991), from two angles: as a work of art dealing with the Holocaust, and as a cómic that subverts the fictional tradition of the genre, opening itself up to history and the narration of reality. Maus, the first cómic book to treat the topic of the Holocaust in depth, was written by a second-generation witness. It is a story of both physical survival and enduring trauma in the family. En este artículo se analiza el libro de cómic Maus, de Art Spiegelman (1986-1991), desde una doble vertiente: como obra de arte que trata el tema del Holocausto, y como un cómic que subvierte la tradición ficcional del género y abre sus puertas a la historia y a la narración de la realidad. Así, por una parte Maus aparece como el primer cómic en tratar a fondo el tema del Holocausto, escrito por un testigo de segunda generación, que por lo tanto incorpora no sólo una historia de supervivencia sino también la pervivencia del trauma en el contexto familiar. Por otra parte, el análisis de las estrategias a través de las cuales Maus revisa y subvierte algunos de los elementos más característicos del cómic tradicional permite ver como Spiegelman utiliza el género por primera vez para explicar, no ya una ficción, sino un auténtico relato histórico y biográfico
