Estudio comparativo de software SIG y SGBD en entornos Open Source y Propietario aplicados a la Base Topográfica Nacional 1:100.000 (BTN100)

The National Topographic Database at 1:100,000 scale (NTDB100) is a dataset that stores seamless basic spatial information (both geometric and thematic) for the main geographical features within the national territory of Spain. These features are spatially related and conveniently connected according to specific topological constraints. The maintenance of BTN100 based on a permanent update and its subsequent quality control requires a GIS software and a Database Management System (DBMS) which provide a multiproduction environment (from different departments) and which are capable of managing a large amount of data. For this reason the election of the appropriate GIS and DBMS is a priority for the project. The aim of this article is to compare different SIG software, both free software (QGIS, gvSIG) and proprietary software (GeoMedia, ArcGIS), mainly evaluating two parameters: time and number of commands or queries needed to carry out each operation. For a proper comparative, we worked and dropped conclusions using for every option the same data set and following the same visualization, updating and management workflows. Moreover each of these GIS will run against two different DMBS: PostgreeSQL (free software) and Oracle (proprietary). Furthermore this comparative of software takes into account not only the technical aspects but also the constraints and policies of the public administration and the current economic situation that in this moment affects the country and our environment in particular ​
