The chance discovery made by Pere Alsius in 1868 in the Bora Gran d’en Carreras de Serinyà of what he thought was a piece of reindeer antler caught the attention of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona. It also interested Édouard Harlé, who in 1882 carried out in the Bora Gran the first Palaeolithic excavation in Catalonia. It eventually turned out that it was not a piece of antler, but a rib from another animal. After a few years, Pere Alsius was able to demonstrate that there were indeed reindeer remains in the Bora Gran, although only represented by pieces of antler. The presence of this animal in Catalonia south of the Pyrenees has been non-existent or rare throughout prehistory, just like that of other animals of very cold climates ​
