This aricle presents a set of arguments that challenge the traditional interpretations of the toponymic origins of several coastal towns in the Baix Empordà. According to these conventional views, Tamariu derives from the name of tamarisk, Llafranc from the notion of "Frank's land" and Calella from the expression "small cove". The article proposes a new etymology grounded in words that can be translated through modern Basque and that may have been used by the Iberians -the ancient inhabitants of these territories- in their now-extinct language known as Iberian. This etymological reassessment broadenns our understanding of the origins of these place-names and calls into question the linguistic assumptions established to date
