Unamuno’s natural foundation for religious faith

Abstract

ENG- This doctoral dissertation is a collection of sixteen papers related to the question of the nature of religious faith and its justification. All these papers were motivated, implicitly or explicitly, by my interest in the question of whether the desirability of the kind of immortality announced by Christianity can somehow justify religious faith.

The main aim of this doctoral dissertation is to offer a coherent and systematic analysis of Miguel de Unamuno’s (Bilbao, 1864 – Salamanca, 1936) notion of religious faith and the reasoning he offers in defense of it. To put it briefly, Unamuno’s reasoning consists in elaborating a non-cognitivist Christian conception of religious faith and defending it as being something which we are naturally lead to given our most basic and natural inclination to seek an endless existence.

In addition to the papers explicitly focused on the analysis of Unamuno’s proposal, I include in this doctoral dissertation seven papers aimed at the analysis and evaluation of: pragmatic arguments for religious belief (in its classical, Jamesian formulation); arguments for cognitivist and non-cognitivist understandings of religious language (through discussing Logical Positivism and the verifiability principle, Carnap’s confirmability criterion, and R. B. Braithwaite’s prescriptivism) and ethical language (in Stevenson’s emotivist formulation); the question of whether is it reasonable to believe that miracles occur; and the philosophical argument usually offered for an annihilationist understanding of hell. It is this line of reasoning, that at first sight —only at first sight— might appear remote from Unamuno’s philosophical thought, that helps us to reach a deeper understanding of the philosophical and theological relevance that his proposal still has today

CAT- Aquesta tesis doctoral és una col·lecció de setze articles relacionats amb la pregunta per la naturalesa de la fe religiosa i la seva justificació. Tots aquests articles foren motivats, implícita o explícitament, pel meu interès en la pregunta de si la desitjabilitat de la mena de immortalitat anunciada pel Cristianisme pot, d'alguna manera, justificar la fe religiosa.

L’objectiu principal d’aquesta tesis doctoral és oferir un anàlisi coherent i sistemàtic de la concepció de fe religiosa de Miguel de Unamuno (Bilbao, 1864 – Salamanca, 1936) i del raonament que ofereix en defensa d’aquesta. Dit breument, el raonament d’Unamuno consisteix en formular una concepció cristiana no-cognitivista de la fe religiosa i defensar-la en tant que és quelcom a què som portats de manera natural, atesa la nostra inclinació natural més bàsica de cercar una existència inacabable.

A més dels articles explícitament centrats en l'anàlisi de la proposta d’Unamuno, he inclòs en aquesta tesi doctoral set articles que tenen com a objectiu l’anàlisi i avaluació de: els arguments pragmàtics per a la creença religiosa (en la seva formulació clàssica, jamesiana); els arguments a favor de concepcions cognitivistes i no-cognitivistes del llenguatge religiós (discutint el positivisme lògic i el principi de verificabilitat, el criteri de confirmabilitat de Carnap i la concepció prescriptivista de R. B. Braithwaite) i del llenguatge ètic (en la formulació emotivista de Stevenson); la pregunta de si és raonable creure que ocorren miracles; i l’argument filosòfic que de manera més freqüent s’ofereix en favor d’una concepció annihilacionista del infern. És aquesta línia de raonament, que a primer cop d’ull –només a primer cop d’ull– podria semblar llunyana al pensament filosòfic d’Unamuno, el que ens ajuda a arribar a una comprensió més profunda de la rellevància filosòfica i teològica que la seva proposta té encara a dia d’avui
