Childhood obesity is a public health problem that has been on the rise in Catalonia and Spain since the 1990s, especially among families with fewer resources. This phenomenon is closely related to a sedentary lifestyle, an unhealthy diet and the influence of advertising and technology. Despite institutional efforts, the lack of awareness about the seriousness of obesity and the normalization of unhealthy habits make it difficult to prevent it. In addition, the lack of adequate public spaces and environmental pollution limit physical activity.
Faced with this reality, the Hospital Clínic from Barcelona is proposing research focused on the neighborhood Antiga Esquerra of l’Eixample (2020-2024), with the aim of responding to the challenge: what can we do to raise awareness and reduce the health problem generated by childhood and youth obesity?
The objective of this work has been to create an awareness program for families about the causes, consequences and prevention of childhood obesity, implement the pilot program in the aforementioned neighborhood and evaluate its impact, with the possibility of expanding it to other territories in the future.
This approach seeks to generate a real and sustainable change in the health habits of the child population through collaboration between institutions and society
