The journal “Enseñanza de las Ciencias de la Tierra (ECT)” (Teaching Earth Sciences) came into existence
25 years ago. During this time, its main purpose has been to respond to the demands of geology teachers at all
education levels, but having in mind, above all, the secondary school and university teachers working with trainee
teachers. Like all didactics journals, it has had to make a choice: either adapt its style to the requirements derived from
indicators that lead to a good placement in the databases, or cater for the needs of the teachers, whether or not these
needs agree with the former. ECT’s option has been clear-cut. The decisions concerning the contents included in the
magazine, the way of dealing with them and the corresponding structure have been tailored to the teachers’ needs,
which can be grouped into three categories: what geology should be taught, how should it be taught, what resources
can be helpful for this task. The success that ECT has achieved in Latin and Latin American countries, the number of
queries registered in the repository RACO, as well as the number of downloaded articles provide evidence of how
useful and influential it has become
