ENG- Aggressive and violent behavior in adolescents is a complex phenomenon that requires a broad understanding. Individual variables, such as personality and temperament, interact with biographical variables, such as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and contextual variables, such as the family and sociocultural systems.
The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to identify the risk factors associated with delinquent behavior and establish differentiated profiles in adolescents convicted of sexual offenses. To achieve this, two studies were conducted with samples from the Directorate General of Penal Execution to the Community and Juvenile Justice (DGEPCJJ).
In the first study, with 249 adolescents convicted of violent crimes and ages between 15 and 23 years (M = 19.14, SD = 2.03), the relationship between childhood victimization, ACEs, neglect, and delinquent behavior was analyzed. Both ACEs and neglect predict a higher number of crimes committed. Additionally, ACEs are more prevalent in youth in situations of neglect, and delinquent behaviors differ by nationality. It was found that having a file with Basic Social Services is related to a higher involvement in violent crimes.
The second study, with 766 adolescents convicted of sexual offenses and ages between 14 and 27 years (M = 15.60, SD = 1.14), identified differentiated profiles through latent profile analysis (LPA), resulting in five risk groups: low, low-moderate, moderate, moderate-high, and high. This analysis allowed the identification of significant differences in risk factors.
Both studies emphasize the importance of ACEs and neglect in juvenile delinquency. The research highlights the need to early detect risk factors associated with ACEs and neglect, as well as to design adapted prevention and intervention programs
