Most of the candidacies presented in municipal elections in Catalonia do so under a party label,
even in those less populated municipalities where parties have no members or organized groups.
This study seeks to examine the relationship established between Catalan political parties and
their candidacies in Girona municipalities with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants, in order to
understand the reasons why most local candidacies affiliate with a political party and how they
integrate into its organization. A qualitative methodology has been used to study this issue; 21
individuals who ran in the last municipal elections in such municipalities with a candidacy
linked to a political party were interviewed. The aim was to explore their experiences regarding
their relationship with the party. It is concluded that there is a significant number of local
candidacies that do not affiliate with political parties for ideological reasons, but rather for the
advantages that these structures can provide, as current legislation in Catalonia encourages both
political parties and local candidacies to come together, in relationships often based on
convenience and interdependence, in order to obtain benefits that positively affect both sides
