The Spanish transition to democracy is a period neglected by the main histories of language, despite the proliferation of discourses on language among all kinds of cultural, media and political figures at that time. This study aims to analyse the arguments on the languages of Spain expressed by different representatives of the political parties represented in Parliament. The study covers all the parliamentary speeches in the House of Deputies and Senate in debating what would become Article 3 of the Spanish Constitution. It provides a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the arguments, firstly to identify and quantify the most diverse parliamentary speeches in this debate and, secondly, to categorise the arguments used. While the articles in the Spanish Constitution are often seen as an example of political consensus, the parliamentary speeches analysed in the study are interpreted as a paradigmatic example of the discourse of controversy and, above all, dissent ​
