El fortí de la ciutat (1653-1814)

Abstract

The construction of the City fort followed the same construction pattern as those of the main fortresses of Girona (Montjuïc and Conestable). Thus, we find two fortines of fascine between 1653 and 1675, although the latter was transformed into stone. The fortress was not completed until 1693 with the construction of the parapet. The basic function of the city fort was to ensure communication between the urban enclosure and the Fort of the Constable, which was the main defense of Pedreres mountain. The military role of the city’s fort was generally discreet, not only because of its small size, but because it was located in a relatively protected place. In this sense, it only had some prominence in the last moments of the second siege that Girona suffered during the French War (December 1809)

La construcció del fortí de la Ciutat seguí el mateix patró constructiu que els de les principals fortaleses de Girona (Montjuïc i Conestable). Així, trobem dos fortins de feixina entre el 1653 i el 1675, tot i que aquest darrer es transformà en pedra. La fortalesa no s’acabà fins al 1693 amb la construcció del parapet. La funció bàsica del fortí de la Ciutat fou la d’assegurar la comunicació entre el recinte urbà i el fort del Conestable, que era la principal defensa de la muntanya de les Pedreres. El paper militar del fortí de la Ciutat fou, en general, discret, no sols per les seves reduïdes dimensions, sinó perquè s’ubicà en un lloc relativament protegit. En aquest sentit, sols tingué cert protagonisme en els darrers moments del segon setge que patí Girona durant la guerra del Francès (desembre de 1809)
