Sport entities are organizations that manage sporting facilities and events that attract the
attention of millions of spectators worldwide. These can contribute significantly on the
emission of greenhouse gases directly or indirectly.
Carbon footprint calculations are a crucial tool against greenhouse gas emissions and
Climate Change, since it allows us to make and inventory, of all of them, quantify them,
and giving the possibility of conducting mitigation measures for its reduction.
In this Final Degree Project, an inventory has been made about direct and indirect
greenhouse gas emissions of Bàsquet Girona 2014, a professional basketball club that
competes in Endesa League, which also have a multitude of academy teams in lower
categories (base teams).
To this end, emissions have been quantified through four main ways: energy
consumption of sports facilities (origin and magnitude of consumption), travel of the
professional team, travel of the youth teams (type, means, and magnitude of travel), and
wastewater treatment.
Through this detailed analysis, a comprehensive view of how each of these activities
contributes to the Bàsquet Girona’s overall carbon footprint has been obtained.
Additionally, the disparity in emissions among different team categories has been
examined, identifying the main sources and proposing specific actions for each area.
This methodology allows for a clear identification of the areas with the greatest potential
for improvement, facilitating the implementation of efficient and effective policies.
Finally, improvement proposals have been made to reduce the carbon footprint obtained
for each of the four ways considered in the calculation, with special emphasis on
reducing emissions caused by the travel of the youth categories. Furthermore,
suggestions have been made for the installation of clean and renewable energy
generation systems, the reuse of water to reduce its consumption, and other alternative
measures that align with sustainability goals
