There are approximately 608 million farms in the world, of which 84% are small farms and produce 35% of the world's food. Various training programs have been promoted by different organizations to achieve a more sustainable and efficient agricultural practice. In this context, this study has classified a set of small farmers located in north-central Nicaragua (municipalities of Tuma-La Dalia, El Cuá and Waslala) with respect to how they apply the Land Use Management Initiatives (LUMI) that have been implemented in Nicaragua between 1992 and 2002. The objective is to describe their weaknesses and strengths and thus identify key elements that can contribute to the proposal of a New Land Use Management Initiative (NLUMI).
Until the beginning of the 90s, the LUMI were not well developed and land management was carried out in a sectoral manner. The perspective of sustainability began to be incorporated into the LUMI following the Rio summit (1992). Currently, in the farms of the study area, agricultural and livestock systems are the main uses of the land, with 89.16% of the total (2,673ha), while forest cover occupies 10.84% (325ha ).
The analysis of the objectives and recommendations of the LUMI made it possible to extract 55 indicators related to the management of the soil resource, of which 25 were selected linked to the Malawi Principles (PM), with the aim of designing a survey to collect information on land use management from 455 farms in the study area
