This doctoral thesis examines the contribution of the philosophical heritage of the Catalan Countries in the construction of the Catalan national identity. Specifically, it focuses on how Catalan intellectuals have used this heritage through the establishment of historicist paradigms collectively known as "Catalan national philosophy."
The thesis is structured into two parts. The first part is dedicated to studying the phenomenon of national philosophies in general. It defines their epistemological status, methodology, and connection with nationalism, labeling this genre "nationalist historiography of philosophy." To accomplish this task, we conduct a comparative study of national philosophies from around the world, in order to answer questions such as: what is a national philosophy? How and why does nationalism use the history of philosophy? How are these types of discourses constructed, and under which historical conditions do they tend to emerge? Is it a genre of the past or does it persist in contemporary times?
The second part of the thesis delves into the debate concerning Catalan national philosophy. Within this context, we present a detailed analysis of the relationship between philosophy and the construction of the Catalan identity during the period between 1892 and 1918 in the Catalan Countries, including its antecedents and significant consequences.
By adopting an interdisciplinary approach that combines philosophical historiography, intellectual history, and the sociology of philosophy, we show the evolution of the debate and identify twelve key interlocutors (some of whom have never been studied before). These interlocutors are closely connected through mentorship, affiliation, or enmity. Their contributions establish the foundations of what is termed "Catalanist historiography of philosophy." By examining the works of these pivotal figures and the ensuing social manifestations, we describe the emergence and perpetuation of certain paradigms that have contributed to the formation and consolidation of the Catalan identity
