Within the broad and heterogeneous anti-Francoist movement, a role was played by so-called intellectual sectors. It was in the early 1960s, when the influence of these sectors increased exponentially and was consolidated. Catalonia became one of the most important centres in the Spanish State as regards anti-Francoist intellectual ferment. Also, the reality of the struggle against dictatorship facilitated discussions and criticism among these different sectors to benefit the fight against the common enemy. In this context, the Catalan Communists (PSUC) played a major role, though not an overriding one, in relation to other democratic forces in Catalonia ​
