Derivación verbal y cambio tipológico: a propósito del latín -izare

Abstract

This paper focuses on the evolution of -izāre verbs in Latin. It is shown that, whereas in Archaic, Classical and Imperial Latin these verbs are typically unergative and express the Manner in the root, in Late Latin they start to develop transitive uses linked to a change of state reading, which triggers the interpretation of the root as Result, rather than Manner. We relate this change of pattern to the well-known typological shift from a satellite-framed system (Latin) to a verb-framed one (Romance). Based on the principles of Nanosyntax, we explain the reanalysis experienced by the suffix in Late Latin as a change on the size of its lexically stored tree
