The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes in Barcelona is shown today as one of the few European female monasteries of medieval origin, which still retains its monastic closure. Associated since its foundation by Queen Elisenda de Montcada with the Royal House, it has a large part of its original structures from the XIV century, with some certainly singular and original constructive characteristics; a fact that positions it by dimensions and architecture, as one of the best Gothic monastic examples on the continent
