Palliative care consists in preventing and alleviating the suffering of people with a
potentially deadly disease. An essential aspect of palliative care is providing a holistic
approach that considers and adjusts to the unique preferences, needs and experiences
of each person. These aspects change depending on the gender, sexual orientation and
traditional gender norms stablished by society. Therefore, studying and understanding
how gender effects palliative care is fundamental to improve healthcare.
The aim of this literature review is identifying the differences in the needs of people
suffering a terminal illness by gender, sex and sexual orientation.
This literature review includes articles about the effect of gender in palliative care and its
interaction with other relevant factors like age or marital status. The search in literature
databases was guided by the following MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms:
palliative care, sex, gender, transgender. From the 137 articles identified after removing
duplicates, 14 quantitative or qualitative studies and 10 literature reviews or
recommendation articles were included in this review
