Suicide among young people and adolescents is considered a public health problem
worldwide, which is causing increasing concern. It has been a subject of study in
various countries and by different authors, therefore achieving knowledge of the risk
and protective factors for the suicidal behaviour. The objective is to identify mental
health promotion interventions for young people to prevent suicidal behaviour in this
population through a literature review with articles extracted from the Web of Science,
Scielo, PubMed Medline and SCOPUS databases.
Twelve articles have been identified. This paper collects health promotion
interventions, such as education and training for professionals and young people, and
interventions to prevent suicidal behaviour, such as early screening, active monitoring,
5
and promotion of research. Educational interventions are promising, but more
evidence is needed to demonstrate their effectiveness. More effective health
promotion interventions in suicide prevention include restricting access to harmful or
lethal means, developing safety plans and promoting mental and physical health in
young people and adolescents
