Introduction: Child abuse is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO)
as any form of abuse or neglect that affects a child under the age of 18 and
includes any form of physical or psychological abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and
exploitation, or any other action that may harm the health, development or dignity
of the child in a context of responsibility, trust or power. It is a worldwide problem
and it is estimated that one quarter of all adults have suffered child abuse, and
one in five women and one in 13 men claim to have suffered sexual abuse before
the age of 18.
Numerous articles highlight the impact of child abuse on the child’s mental health
and development, relating it to numerous mental health disorders such as post-
traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder or
substance abuse. Despite the magnitude of the problem, child abuse is complex
and difficult to study, as it is not always easy to detect. This is why the studied
literature has not been able to establish causality between child abuse and the
development of mental health disorders in adulthood, but it has been evidenced
to be a risk factor.
The primary care nurse plays a key role in the detection of this abuse and its
treatment, as well as the prevention of its long-term consequences.
Objectives: The aim of this project is to study the relationship between child
abuse and the development of a mental health disorder in adulthood in the region
of Girona
