Every year, 15 billion premature babies are born in the world, many of whom
require admission to the NICU. The nursing staff of the unit presents a great
challenge not only in the care and care of the premature newborn but also in
family-centered care. The present study aims to highlight the importance of
comprehensive and holistic attention focused on the parent-child binomial.
Several studies have shown that parental stress is a risk factor for the future
social, behavioral and functional development of the baby. Understanding the
emotional shock and addressing the psychosocial needs of the parents is im-
portant to influence the best possible long-term outcome for the newborn and
the family. It should be mentioned that most of the needs and problems menti-
oned by parents during their stay in the unit are directly related to culture. For
this reason, transcultural nursing care is necessary as an indispensable tool to
humanize attention to the family unit, care that is directly related to the reduction
of parental stress
