Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a form of gender-based violence that has serious
consequences for the physical, sexual, reproductive and psychological health of girls and
women who undergo it. This practice violates the rights to physical and psychological
integrity and perpetuates gender inequalities.
In Catalonia, and particularly in the Girona region, there is a high concentration of immigrant
population from countries where this practice is common, which increases the risk of girls
with roots in these traditions being mutilated.
Although there is an Action Protocol to Prevent FGM, its implementation is difficult and
often reactive rather than proactive. This means that only high-risk cases are detected and
measures are not usually taken to prevent, detect, and act in less urgent situations, nor to
carry out proper post-recovery.
To address this problem, the project aims to develop, implement, and evaluate the
effectiveness of a training intervention on Female Genital Mutilation for pediatric primary
care nurses. This way, new mutilations can be prevented by applying clinical practice and
clinical detection knowledge of pediatric nurses
