Preventing nitrate pollution in ground water requires an appropriate knowledge of regional
hydrogeological flow systems, and their influence upon the migration of solutes. In this paper, we
describe the hydrological features of the Manol River basin (Alt Empordà, NE Spain). It consists of a two
unit system with distinct hydraulic head that define a downward vertical flux, and therefore, a larger
nitrate pollution of the deepest layers. Intensive use of pig manure as fertilizer and the actual ground
water withdrawal rates enhances nitrate occurrence, and a lost of the quality of ground water resources
