Les muralles medievals i modernes de Sant Martí d'Empúries: noves dades a partir de les excavacions al carrer de la Francesa = The medieval and modern walls of Sant Martí d'Empúries: new data from the excavations in Francesa street

Abstract

The present work aims to bring together and synthesize the knowledge we have so far about the medieval and modern walls of Sant Martí d’Empúries. To this end, written as well as oral and photographic sources will be analysed, as well as, obviously, archaeological data. The archaeological data come mainly from three stages of research: the information collected by Emili Gandia in the early twentieth century, the excavations of Martín Almagro in 1962 and the recent excavation in the winter of 2021. This last excavation has allowed us to date the northern wall to the late fifteenth century

El present treball pretén aglutinar, sintetitzar i posar al dia el coneixement que és té fins al moment sobre les muralles d’època medieval i moderna de Sant Martí d’Empúries. A tal efecte es recullen les fonts escrites així com orals i fotogràfiques que ja eren conegudes i publicades i, com no podia ser d'altra manera, les dades arqueològiques. Les dades arqueològiques procedeixen principalment de tres etapes de la recerca: les informacions recollides per Emili Gandia a principis del segle XX, les excavacions de Martín Almagro al 1962 i la recent excavació de l'hivern del 2021, que ha permès datar el pany nord de la muralla de finals del segle XV
