The poet Joan Brossa (Barcelona, 1919-1998) and the painter Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923-2012) have been two of the most outstanding Catalan creators of the second half of the 20th century. From the moment they met, in November 1946, they immediately forged a great friendship that will soon also be the seed of an extensive artistic collaboration, in the spirit of the avant-garde, that spans from the beginning of the magazine Dau al Set, in September 1948, which both helped to found, until the great bibliophile book Carrer de Wagner, 1989, which was their last great work signed in common. For more than forty years they had collaborated together in a multitude of projects (graphic work editions, bibliophile books and artist books, magazines, catalogs, theater and music projects) in which they had maintained a relationship of permanent friendship, only interrupted the last years.
In December 1950, Antoni Tàpies left for Paris, with a grant from the French Institute. On December 15, 1950, he wrote to his friend Joan Brossa to tell him his first impressions of the city and to tell him how important his friendship was to him. It is the first of the letters that constitute the epistolary between the two creators. The
correspondence between Joan Brossa and Antoni Tàpies consists of 32 documents from 1950 to 1991. Of these documents, 20 are written by the painter and 12 by the poet. 23 of these documents, which form the most important nucleus of correspondence, were written during Tàpies’ stay in Paris in 1950 and 1951. The rest of the letters document the artist’s international success in Paris and New York, or let us know the work process of some works made in collaboration, such as the book Frègoli, published in 1969, or other vicissitudes of their friendship and common projects. Although some letters are known, there is still no edition of the correspondence between Brossa and Tàpies.
The aim of this work is, therefore, to make a study on the relationship and collaboration between Joan Brossa and Antoni Tàpies, their cultural, social and political context, and furthermore to establish the critical edition of their correspondence. By rereading and reviewing his published texts and collaborative works, the most outstanding critical texts that have meditated on their works and collaboration, and by the search for unpublished or little-known material, we construct, with rigor, a story and a study also enriched with their correspondence, largely unpublished. Thus, the study and critical editing of the correspondence between Joan Brossa and Antoni Tàpies want to contribute to deepen their work, their friendship and their collaboration,
showing the uniqueness and the power of their works in common that make up an extraordinary and emblematic contribution to the Catalan and European culture of the second half of the 20th century.
