Introduction: The Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder
characterized by abdominal pain and distension that decrease after defecation o
changes in bowel movements, frequency, and stool’s form. It has been shown
that a diet low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides,
and polyols can help in reducing these symptoms. Aims: To determine the
efficacy of a low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides,
and polyols diet on the Irritable Bowel Syndrome pathology. Methodology: A
thorough literature review has been done in the MEDLINE (PubMed) and
Elsevier-Science Direct database, of articles published in the last 10 years.
Results: Throughout the review a total amount of 11 articles have been selected
after the literature review has been done. The majority of the people who have
participated in the studies have confirmed a reduction in the abdominal pain,
distension and flatulence which are caused by the Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Conclusions: A low fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides, and polyols diet
is effective in the management of the chronic gastrointestinal symptoms of the
Irritable Bowel Syndrome. More research is needed to assess its effectiveness
compared to other dietary measures and the impact it may have on the gut
microbiota
